Do I have to and should I file income tax return?
Updated: 8/31/05
The US government encourages everybody to file income tax. But there are
certain cases that you are not required to file.
If your income is less that the required amount to file income tax return
and you paid any taxes through your employer, it is a good chance that you
may get some of those taxes back when you file your return. Usually the
income below the required amount is not taxable and you will receive all
of the federal taxes back.
You should also file your income tax return when your emigration status is not
yet legalized. If you are in the process of filing for green card, filing
income tax returns for each year of your stay in the US is very important.
The US Immigration will definitely ask you to prove that you paid the taxes, so
if you file on regular basis every year you have one less thing to worry about
during legalization process.
